Moving house involves dozens of small tasks. This checklist breaks them into manageable stages so nothing is forgotten. Print it, tick it off, and share it with anyone else involved in the move.

1
8 weeks before
- Confirm your moving date and exchange contracts if buying
- Book your removals company and request a written quote
- Start decluttering room by room
- Research schools, GPs and utilities for the new area

4 weeks before
- Order packing boxes, tape, bubble wrap and paper
- Notify your landlord or estate agent
- Arrange time off work if moving on a weekday
- Start packing non-essential items

2 weeks before
- Confirm the moving plan with your removals company
- Arrange parking or loading bay access at both addresses
- Notify utilities, council, bank, employer and insurers
- Update your address with DVLA, NHS and subscriptions
4
1 week before
- Pack a first-night box with essentials
- Defrost the freezer and run down food supplies
- Label every box by room and contents
- Confirm key collection and handover times

Moving day
- Do a final meter reading and photograph the readings
- Keep valuables, documents and keys with you
- Walk through every room, cupboard and loft before leaving
- Welcome the removals crew and show them around

After the move
- Check all boxes and furniture are accounted for
- Unpack the essentials first: kitchen, beds, bathroom
- Update any remaining address details
- Register for a new GP and dentist if you have moved area
Packing tips that save time
- Use small boxes for books and heavy items; large boxes for light, bulky items.
- Wrap glass and fragile items individually in paper or bubble wrap.
- Label every box on the top and side with the room and a brief contents list.
- Keep screws and fittings in labelled bags taped to the furniture they belong to.
- Pack a first-night box with kettle, mugs, snacks, phone chargers and toiletries.
